Society of Amateur Radio Astronomers

Building a Brand That Connects a Global Scientific Community

Overview

Since 2024, I have served as the volunteer lead designer for the Society of Amateur Radio Astronomers (SARA), a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing education, collaboration, and discovery in the field of radio astronomy.

My role extends beyond creating event merchandise. I have helped establish a consistent visual identity for the organization's annual conference, designed and launched the SARA merchandise storefront, and developed creative assets that strengthen engagement among members worldwide.

The result has been a growing collection of branded products, a stronger visual presence, and more than $30,000 in merchandise sales through the SARA Gifts online store.

he Challenge

SARA serves a passionate community of scientists, educators, students, engineers, and hobbyists who share a fascination with exploring the universe through radio astronomy.

As the organization grew, it needed a more cohesive brand experience that could:

  • Increase engagement before, during, and after the annual conference

  • Create memorable merchandise attendees would actually want to wear and collect

  • Generate additional revenue to support the organization's mission

  • Establish a consistent visual identity across digital and physical touchpoints

  • Appeal to both seasoned radio astronomers and newcomers entering the field

The challenge was creating a brand system that felt both scientifically credible and approachable while celebrating the unique culture of amateur radio astronomy.

The Approach

Conference Merchandise Design

Each year, I develop a complete merchandise collection for the SARA Conference, including:

  • Event t-shirts

  • Apparel graphics

  • Commemorative merchandise

  • Conference branding elements

  • Promotional graphics

Rather than relying on generic astronomy imagery, I focused on creating designs inspired by real radio astronomy concepts, observatories, hydrogen line observations, antenna arrays, and the scientific discoveries that unite the community.

The goal was to transform conference merchandise from simple souvenirs into collectible items that attendees would proudly wear throughout the year.

Building the SARA Gifts Store

To expand the organization's reach beyond the conference itself, I designed and launched SaraGifts.org, an online merchandise store dedicated to the radio astronomy community.

The storefront was designed to:

  • Extend the SARA brand experience year-round

  • Create a simple purchasing experience

  • Showcase conference merchandise and specialty products

  • Generate ongoing revenue for the organization

  • Reach enthusiasts who may not attend the annual conference

The site combines e-commerce functionality with a visual identity tailored specifically to the radio astronomy community.

Creating a Distinct Visual Language

Across every touchpoint, I developed a design system inspired by:

  • Radio telescope arrays

  • Celestial mapping

  • Signal visualization

  • Deep-space observation

  • Scientific exploration

This approach helped differentiate SARA from traditional astronomy organizations while reinforcing its unique focus on radio astronomy.

Results

Measurable Impact

  • Generated more than $30,000 in merchandise sales

  • Designed and launched SaraGifts.org

  • Created annual conference merchandise collections beginning in 2024

  • Established a more cohesive visual identity across merchandise and digital channels

  • Increased opportunities for community engagement through branded products

Organizational Impact

The merchandise program evolved from a conference necessity into a meaningful extension of the SARA brand. Members now have a way to celebrate their passion for radio astronomy beyond the conference itself, while the organization benefits from an additional revenue stream that supports its educational mission.
